The Alamo has been on my bucket list for a long time. Growing up I would watch reruns of Davy Crockett TV. Series https://youtu.be/txcRQedoEyY . When I taught Westward Expansion the history of Texas as it’s own nation fascinated me. So it was as a real treat to get to visit. The Alamo was originally a Spanish mission to convert Natives to Catholicism. Then it became a Spanish military outpost, Stayed a Mexican outpost after Mexican Independence, during fight for Texas independence it was a Fortress used at the Battle the Alamo, stayed a Texas military base, and the a US military outpost when Texas joined the US, and later a warehouse. In the 1930s it became a WPA (another New Deal) project to restore the property and it became a historic site. It’s free to the public, but I did pay for the audio tour.
The River walk in San Antonio is extraordinary. It’s the best greenway I’ve Seen in any city. When you are down on the walk you forget you are in a city. The river, the trees, the gardens, sculptures, outdoor restaurants are all just beautiful.
